After reviewing rhythms and reviewing note names, we finally started learning how to play Boomwhackers - pitched percussion instruments shaped like tubes! These color-coded tubes allow us to hear the pitch for different notes and allows us to practice reading music. For the next several weeks, we will be practicing these concepts for further learning!

This week, third grade reviewed note names through a class challenge! Each student was challenged to name one note in order to get us to our class goal of 15 correct note names in under two minutes. While we didn't end up beating our two-minute challenge, we got almost all of our questions correct! The students were eager to try again!
After our challenge, we started to learn a new musical concept - counting rhythms! We learned how to count and clap whole notes, half notes, and quarter notes using our hands and then using rhythm sticks. The students did an AMAZING job with this on the first day! I am so proud of their hard work and participation this week. We will continue to work on note names and rhythm counting to get ready for bucket drumming and boomwhackers! Today our third grade class began learning about note naming in music. We learned about the musical staff and how it is made of five lines and four spaces. One way to remember this is to use your hand - we have five fingers and four spaces between them all!
To remember the note names for lines, we created our own phrase similar to "Every Good Boy Does Fine" - one of the most common phrases used for many years. Together, third grade decided "Everyone Gets Boxtops Delivered Fast!" To remember the space names, we just remember FACE! Our class today ended with an Around-The-World type game where we practiced naming our notes on MusicTheory.net. Third grade proved that they are excited to learn about music and they will soon be ready to start playing Ms. Kingston's favorite percussion instruments - the Boomwhackers! It's Concert Week!
Our spring concert will be held this Thursday, May 16th, at 7:00PM. Students in K-4 general music will need to be at EAC by 6:40 for check in. Doors for the public will officially open at 6:50. Concert will start at 7:00! We look forward to sharing all of our hard work with our friends, family, teachers, and community! Today in music, third grade connected their classroom lesson on sound with the song "Do, Re, Mi" with Boomwhackers! Boomwhackers are pitched tubes of different lengths and when you strike them on the floor or in your hands, they create a specific sound related to a note in music! We learned that the longer the tube, the lower the pitch and the shorter the tube, the higher the pitch! Students noticed that the sound created from striking the instrument on different materials also made a difference in volume levels (hitting with your hands is actually louder!)
Overall, this was a great way to relate the science of sound to music class! Try it at home with different items such as cups, pots and pans, or even buckets! For our Spring Concert, all K-3 classes have been asked to sing two songs. One is The Bumble Bee Boogie! The students have been learning the words (and even helped create the dance in class!) and you can click below to find the song for your student to practice at home!
